Infection-fighting campaigns are saving lives (and protecting bottom lines) nationwide. A roundup of what others are doing—and a new IHI initiative.

What it means to you: More than 3,100 hospitals currently report medical errors and infection rates as part of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's 5 Million Lives Campaign. By participating, they also helped save about 122,000 lives — and let their patients and communities know about it.

The scoop: The 5 Million Lives Campaign is an initiative to protect patients from five million incidents of medical harm over two years (December 2006 to December 2008). It's a follow-up to the IHI's 100,000 Lives Campaign that challenged 3,000 hospitals to strive for perfection and save 100,000 lives over 18 months. In June 2006 IHI announced that participating hospitals avoided an estimated 122,300 needless deaths.

“There was a day when manufacturers expected a defect rate in their products, and we were thinking that way, too,” Donna Truesdell, director of quality at Cooley Dickinson hospital in Northampton, Mass., told Newsweek. No failure was acceptable after Truesdell and her team joined the IHI campaign, cracked down on imperfections, and helped the hospital go for months without a single case of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP).
