Bloodstream infections are especially dangerous in children, even more so for patients in the pediatric intensive care unit. That's why Craig Gilliam - Director of Epidemiology and Infection Control at the Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock, Ark. - and his colleagues spent more than seven years developing and implementing techniques for reducing bloodstream infections in the hospital's pediatric ICU. Gilliam here discusses the step-by-step approach the team took to implement infection-control measures one at a time and evaluate the results. Gilliam and Dr. Adnan Bhutta co-authored an influential British Medical Journal article on their program and what they learned, and Gilliam elaborates on that article.
