Dr. William Jarvis, president of Jason and Jarvis Associates, a healthcare industry consulting firm, is a highly published expert in infection control. A leader at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for 23 years, he has also served as president of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) and past President of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) Research Foundation. In this podcast, recorded at a recent APIC conference, Jarvis reveals that rates of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are actually eight to 11 times higher than previous estimates. In fact, 20,000 people die from MRSA each year, more people die than die from HIV. Jarvis talks about that statistic and shares insights on the importance of evidence-based control measures, active screening and financial incentives as a catalyst for prevention.
