Dr. Tammy Lundstrom, JD, is chief medical officer of the Detroit area’s Providence Hospital. At a conference of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), she spoke about the impact of legislation in the battle against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, as well as other healthcare-acquired infections (HAIs). In this podcast, Lundstrom discusses the balance among publicly reporting infection rates, mandating active surveillance and practicing infection-prevention techniques. She also talks about the role of infection control practitioners (ICPs) in communicating the new Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) rule, which affects how Medicare will pay (or not pay) for treatment of certain conditions in particular diagnosis-related groups (DRGs), including some HAIs.
