Central venous catheters, and devices in general, cause the majority of hospital-acquired infections. Understanding the vices behind these devices can reduce the number of infections, according to Dr. Issam Raad, Professor of Medicine and Chairman of the Department of Infectious Diseases, Infection Control and Employee Health in the Division of Internal Medicine at the University of Texas, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. In this presentation, Dr. Raad describes how hygiene, antiseptic techniques and technology led to dramatic reductions in infection rates at M.D. Anderson.
