When it comes to inserting catheters, the University of Nebraska Medical Center leaves as little as possible to chance. Instead, staffers reach for a catheter-insertion kit and an insertion checklist to cut down on the oversights that can lead to infections. At the annual conference of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology in San Jose, California, Mark E. Rupp, M.D. — a Professor of Infectious Disease and Director of Healthcare Epidemiology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha — outlined his hospital’s creation and use of the kit and checklist, and how they make following infection-control measures easier and more automatic for health professionals. In this vodcast, Dr. Rupp elaborates on that pilot project, and discusses how to combat staff apathy once the novelty of such a program has worn off. |
