Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa., has become known as a leader in infection control and patient safety. Between 2003 and 2006, the hospital’s Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) and Coronary Care Unit (CCU) saw a greater than 95 percent reduction in central line-associated bloodstream infections and reduced the number of catheter-related bloodstream infection deaths to zero.
In this vodcast, Dr. Jerome Granato, medical director of Allegheny General’s CCU, and Cheryl Herbert, the hospital’s director of infection control, talk about how the hospital was able to reduce infections by adopting standardized procedures and fostering a team approach to infection control. |
